Huge Loss in Naga Supermarket Fire

November 9, 2008

by Fatima Edna Balaquiao

Last Friday evening, the Naga City supermarket was razed by fire particularly the 2nd and 3rd floors. Ninety-nine (99%) of the stores on the upper 2 floors were devastated. Rows of ukay-ukay stores (second-hand clothes sellers,) vegetables stalls, chicheria wholesalers, dried fish stalls, meat stalls were gobbled up by flames.

It’s almost December and market sellers are already on their way to stock-up for the Christmas holiday. It’s really sad seeing them now. They ply their trade on the side streets – sa gilid kan tinampo – specially the small-time vendors.

The local government has declared a state of calamity in Naga city. I don’t know when things will get back to normal, but probably it will take time. Haloy pa ini!. (Photo Credits: by kaveh; ToNo’World’s) =0=

Like swans cruising in a lake, the majorettes enthrall crowds in a Naga parade

September 24, 2008

The parades in Naga City can’t be more spectacular without the stunning baton twirlers (aka majorettes) who strut with the blare of loud horns and the cadence of the drums. In their colorful costumes, they look like hybrids of the most exciting girls that roam the earth. They remind us of vivacious cheerers in a basketball game, the ballet dancers in a theatre, the contestants of a beauty contest and the gentle swans cruising in a lake.

Looking at their gaudy dresses and long spotless legs seems like watching the fantasia in a ballet production of Swan Lake. The girls pictured here remind me of Anna Pavlova, the legendary Russian dancer in the early 1900’s best known for her ballet interpretations of Camille Saint Saen’s “Dying Swan.” Pavlova enthralled crowds of her movements that was artistic and well-received in her time. The dance specially choreographed for her by Michel Fokine was such a part of her persona so that at her deathbed, Pavlova requested to be buried in her feathered gossamer swan costume.

In pictures sent by UP Ibalon’s Fatima Edna Balaquiao of the 2008 Penafrancia Fiesta Parade (plus old ones by Colnago & Molibok) the same swans of the ballet stage are somehow recreated by the pretty majorettes on the street. With their batons and the Chinese-inspired umbrellas, a similar soft feeling of elegance and grace must have beheld the on-lookers. The dazzling girls surely made Naga as captivating as ever. UP Ibalon’s Edna Fatima Balaquaio was there to witness the event which marked the series of festivities which will culminate in the Fluvial Procession and Thanksgiving Mass on September 20 and 21, 2008 respectively. The Penafrancia Fiesta is expected to attract about a million visitors and devotees.

I dropped by today at her sis in laws canteen in Sagpon, Daraga, Albay where i last saw George maybe a year ago. She told me that George and his wife Beth was on the way home in the Executive carrier bus after the check up of her wife in Manila. He was dead on the spot while his Beth suffered fractures and had stainless implants but is otherwise in stable condition. Their check up was reportedly already delayed by one week because they were still waiting for collectibles, having been saddled by the medical bills of Beth among others. Condolence to the family of George.”

“The only agendum at Kopi Meeting in Naga is to know how to help the family of the late George Evangelio. Let us all come. I am one of those who did not have the chance to meet George in his lifetime, but this tragedy in his family really touches everyone of us deeply.”

“This is indeed a tragedy, a family of six to cap it all. I don’t know George, his wife, or any of his kids. Since Simon is studying in Goa, Camarines Sur, tell him to come to my parent’s house and introduce himself—- to my mother specially, and my wife Rebekah who’s still there. I’ll give him some contribution as well. Be safe.”
Jose (Boy) Remo, M.D., St. Louis, Missouri, USA
